Wave Your Phone to Call Me!

The Gadget Monkey
August 24, 2008

Cellphone missing a bit of motion sensitivity? Gesturetek has developed an ingenious workaround – by installing their software on your cellphone your built in camera is used to detect motion, hence allowing you to control on-screen action in much the same way you would use a Nintendo Wii remote.

This ingenious motion control system from Minority Report wannabes Gesturetek is starting to penetrate the North American market, while they also have a licensing deal with Japanese cellphone carrier NTT Docomo.

Gesturetek has also licensed the technology to Sony EyeToy games, with the PS2 camera utilised in much the same way.

With user interface technology a bit of a mobile device hot potato these days, this clever approach from Gesturetek is going to open up a lot of mobile devices to motion sensitive interaction.

Watch out for kids waving their cellphones around in a park near you.

GestureTek technologies have international patent protection. U.S patents include 5,534,917 (Video image based control system), 7,058,204 (Multiple camera control system), 7,227,526 (3D-vision image control system), 7,379,563 (Bi-manual movement tracker) and 7,379,566 (Optical flow-based tilt sensor). EyeMobile® is protected under patent TMA 700,194 with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office for "mobile device application software featuring gesture recognition technology."
