Shake Rock'n Roll Spawns New Generation of Camera Phone Games
GESTURETEK MOBILE PUTS GESTURE CONTROL INTO THE HANDS OF MOBILE DEVICE USERS
SUNNYVALE, CA – January 12, 2007 – GestureTek Mobile, a division of GestureTek Inc., the world leader in computer vision gesture-based control for information and entertainment systems, announced the release of the second game to use its EyeMobile® Engine: “Camera Phone Darts™” from GOSUB 60. Camera Phone Darts™ uses the EyeMobile® Engine to bring the real-worldmovement of a mobile handset into gameplay. The game drops you into a virtual pub and allows you to play darts by simply aiming and moving your camera phone to control the action! All popular dart variations are featured, including Cricket, 301, 501, Around the World, Baseball and Golf. Players choose from four modes, including Practice, Quick Play, Pass-N-Play (play with friends!) and Career Mode (play with over 20 AI opponents of varying skills).
GestureTek Mobile’s first EyeMobile® enabled game, “3D Tilt-a-World,” was an instant success, being named #1 mobile game download by the IGN Buyers Guide. 3D Tilt-a-World was conceived and funded by TiltaWorld LLC, and developed and published by Super Happy Fun Fun, Inc. It is the world’s first 3D mobile game that utilizes the camera to enable motion-controlled gaming, overcoming the cumbersome and non-intuitive button presses of conventional interfaces. Any game action can be controlled, naturally and intuitively, by just tilting the phone. Hitting all demographics, 3D Tilt-a-World’s easy-to-learn/hard-to-master innovative gameplay uses camera-controlled navigation and has a 3D playfield, with multi-tiered levels of maze-like paths, puzzles, and gems.
The EyeMobile® Engine offers 3 levels of tracking, described as Shake, Rock, and Roll. Shake provides the amount of “shake” as a single value that programmers can use as an input for such actions as shuffling MP3 play lists, throwing dice, etc. Roll provides the kind of joystick style input that SHFF uses in Tilt-A-World. Rock is a gesture recognition system built on top of the Roll engine, and is used in GOSUB 60’s Camera Phone Darts™.
“These first two games represent a very exciting use of our unique, patented camera-based control technology. There is an endless number of ways this technology can be used to not only enhance mobile games, but also to improve the way in which people navigate other dynamics of mobile use,” says Bill Leckonby, CEO of GestureTek Inc.
In addition to the Brew platform, GestureTek Mobile also has released Symbian and Linux versions of the EyeMobile® Engine. GestureTek has also recently contracted with one of the world’s largest wireless carriers to embed the EyeMobile® Engine into their vendors' handsets, and provide a Java interface to allow downloadable Java applications to access the EyeMobile® trackers. These phones will hit the market this spring.
“My expectation is that all camera phones will incorporate this functionality within 3 years. The sensitive control enabled by this software-only tracking technique provides novel user interface controls, in addition to gaming applications. We are seeing a large number of exciting and unique games and applications developed in the near term," says Francis MacDougall, CTO of GestureTek Inc.
