GestureTek Mobile to Showcase EyeMobile®-ENGINE Technology for Motion-Controlled Mobile Gaming at BREW 2007 Conference
BREW Extension Powers Award-Winning 3D Tilt-a-World
SUNNYVALE, CA – June, 2007 – GestureTek Mobile, a business unit of GestureTek Inc., today announced that it will showcase its EyeMobile®-ENGINE™ gesture control technology at QUALCOMM’s BREW® 2007 Conference. Developed for QUALCOMM’s BREW solution, the technology uses cell phone cameras to enable real-time, motion-controlled gaming on the handset, replacing cumbersome button navigation with an interface that is powered by tilting the phone in various directions. GestureTek will showcase its products in booth #42 at the BREW 2007 Conference, being held June 20 - 22 in San Diego.
The first game to use GestureTek Mobile’s EyeMobile®-ENGINE was 3D Tilt-a-World, which has been named the No.1 mobile game download by the IGN Buyers Guide and received 2006/07 nominations for Best Puzzle Game, Most Innovative Design, and Best Mobile Game from the International Mobile Gaming Awards. The game allows users to roll a ball through a series of 3D mazes, collect gems and avoid dropping off the edge of the board completely through hand motions that are translated into game movements through the phone camera. The game was conceived and funded by TiltaWorld LLC, and was developed and published by Super Happy Fun Fun, Inc.
Nearly any mobile game or other mobile application can utilize the EyeMobile®-ENGINE’S motion control features. Game actions from driving, flying, shooting, fly-casting and even a simple roll of the dice can be controlled naturally and intuitively through hand motion. The technology can also be used to change the way in which people interface with their mobile phones day-to-day. For example, the tilt of a user hand can now control the movement of a menu instead of the former clicking of keypads.
For handset manufacturers, the EyeMobile®-ENGINE eliminates the expense and real estate of mounting a special chip on a circuit board to deploy gesture recognition. Instead it offers a pure software solution delivered over the air as a BREW extension.
“QUALCOMM provides advanced technology providers like GestureTek with an excellent vehicle for monetization through BREW,” said Francis MacDougall, CTO of GestureTek Inc. “As a result, it has been great collaborating with QUALCOMM in both the technical and business arenas.”
“By utilizing QUALCOMM’s BREW solution, GestureTek enables mobile game publishers and developers to create innovative new games based on device movement,” said Mike Yuen, senior director of the BREW Gaming Group for QUALCOMM Internet Services. “GestureTek’s EyeMobile®-ENGINE enhances the mobile game experience for gamers using BREW devices.”
The EyeMobile®-ENGINE includes three trackers – dubbed Shake, Rock, and Roll – representing different types of motion for different types of input. Shake can be used for actions such as rolling dice and shuffling MP3 decks. Rock interprets right, left, up and down gestures to generate traditional cursor-style user input commands. Roll offers joystick control by responding to tilting motions to navigate games, maps or Web pages.
The EyeMobile®-ENGINE extends GestureTek’s patented Video Gesture Control technology, which is employed in applications ranging from retail display and digital signage to console gaming. It has been licensed by Microsoft for its XBOX 360 Gaming Console Live Vision Camera, and Sony Computer Entertainment for its PlayStation2™ EyeToy™.
